In five exhilarating days, you’ll peel away layers of South African natural and cultural history, in a way
you’ve not experienced before. This is no dry history lesson – it’s live theatre, and you’re one of the
players on stage. No matter your nationality, you’ll be spellbound by the gifted story-telling of the
professional guides stationed at the Battlefields. You’ll relive the legendary battles on the sites where
Zulus, Boers and British fought it out at Isandlwana, Rorkes Drift and Spioenkop, and you’ll walk and ride

Five on Shaka’s original royal hunting grounds. It’s war, warriors, culture and wild animals, the right

Day 1: (Mon) Johannesburg
We’ll meet you off your flight at OR Tambo International Airport, introduce ourselves and get to know you, before you’re transferred by airport shuttle to your overnight accommodation, at the nearby Protea Hotel. Accommodation: Protea OR Tambo or similar

Day 2: (Tues) Spioenkop (BB, PL, BD)
Our adventure begins in earnest today, so after a great South African breakfast, we head out, destination Spioenkop, the third and bloodiest attempt by the British to relieve the besieged Ladysmith. There, right on the battlefield, we’ll meet our specialist guide, who’ll waste no time transporting you back to January 1900, as he plays out the tragic battle between Boer and Brits. The charismatic story-telling of those nine dramatic days will carry you into battle, and you’ll be right there, in the heart of the action. We’ve chosen to enjoy a picnic lunch today, to take full advantage of the sensational scenery. We return to the comfort of our chosen hotel, arriving around mid afternoon, allowing time to absorb the drama of the day and relax into our accommodation before dinner. Accommodation: Rorke’s Drift Hotel or similar

Day 3: (Wed) Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift (BB, BD)
Tuck into a hearty breakfast this morning, for we’re off to battle today, an experience enhanced by the magical storytelling skills of our specialist battlefields guides. We move onto the eerie landscape of Isandlwana , where 20 000 mighty Zulu warriors took on the firepower of the British troops, and wiped out close to an entire regiment in about 2½ hours. We’ll thrill to stories of individuals and regiments, feel the anguish of both friends and enemies, and soon, watch a clear picture develop of how this battle influenced the next. After lunch (own account), we visit Rorke’s Drift. Here, on the very site where the battle took place, we’ll relive the experience of a handful of British soldiers, outnumbered 35 to 1; we’ll feel the tension as they fought off 4 000 Zulus for 12 hours, in a battle which saw the award of 11 Victoria Crosses, the highest number awarded to a Regiment (the 24th Regiment of Foot) in a single action. What an extraordinary and impressionable day, filled with real tales of hardship, heartache and bravery. We return to our country hotel, thoughts lingering of young lives lost, medals won, and history made...to be greeted with warm hospitality and a delicious dinner. Accommodation: Rorke’s Drift Hotel or similar

Day 4: (Thu) eMakhosini – Valley of the Zulu Kings (BB)
We breakfast early in anticipation of a journey of expansive African landscapes and fascinating cultural insights into the lives, influence and history of the Zulu nation. We visit the Umgungundlovu Interpretive Centre and the Kwazulu Cultural Museum at Ondini, both offering an interactive, accessible tale of Zulu culture, from traditions to today – you move at your own pace through the Centres, watching movie clips, enjoying well-designed displays and working the interactive topographical table. You’re in the land of kings, and it’s a royal experience. The adventure’s not over...for we travel to our accommodation through Kwazulu-Natal’s flagship Hlulhuwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve, with the distinct possibility of spotting a vast range of game, including the impressive Big Five. It’s a gradual, yet exhilarating ride through the Park, binoculars at the ready, eyes peeled, as we all scan the landscape for something wild and wonderful. We travel to our lodge for our overnight stay, where cool, comfortable accommodation, a sociable setting and substantial meals contribute to a truly authentic African experience. Accommodation: Emdoneni Lodge or similar

Day 5: (Fri) Hlulhuwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve/Emdoneni Cat Experience (BB)
Rise and shine, for we meet our game ranger at around the same time the wild world is waking up and active. We traverse the acclaimed Hlulhuwe-iMfolozi game park for five hours in an open safari vehicle, so there’s little between you and the landscape, or what we hope to be a Big Five adventure. We’ll track the Big Five, but we’ll enjoy numerous other species like zebra, giraffe, and with luck, cheetah and wild dog. This afternoon, an extraordinary experience awaits you and tame cheetah at Emdoneni Lodge, an interactive encounter where you’ll be spellbound by their cat rehabilitation programme. You can’t get closer to cats than that, and you’ll prove it back home with photographs! Accommodation: Emdoneni Lodge or similar

Day 6: (Sat) St Lucia Estuary/Durban (BB)
Early morning, and our boat awaits us at the St Lucia Estuary, part of the World heritage site, the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park (iSimangaliso Wetland Park). Sit back, as we cruise past both little and large wildlife which live in and around this glorious waterway. Lift your camera, press the shutter, no other work required. And it’s time to leave the area. We board our bus for a relaxed journey to Durban, where our estimated time of arrival is around lunchtime
