Himalaya Adventure

Day 1

Drive from Islamabad to Chilas (474km, 12-13 hrs). The journey on the Karakoram Highway is most exciting and thrilling. It is a monument to the engineering feast and one of the most spectacular roads and the world’s highest metalled border crossing. It connects Pakistan and China stretching over a distance of 1300km between Islamabad and Kashgar, winding through three mountain ranges and following the ancient Silk route along the Indus Valley to the Chinese border at Khunjerab Pass Overnight at hotel.

Day 2

Drive ( 3-4 hrs) to Tato and trek ( 3-4 hrs) to Fairy Meadows. Nanga Parbat, Sanskrit for “Naked Mountain” is so named because some of its slopes are so steep that neither snow nor any vegetation sticks to them. Nanga Parbat is the second highest mountain of Pakistan and ninth highest in the world. It is not considered part of the Karakoram but it forms the western extremity of the Himalaya being separated from the former by the mighty Indus River. This mountain is considered one of the most spectacular of all. Since 1934 mountaineers have attempted to reach the summit by a variety of challenging routes that it offers; few have succeeded. In fact Nanga Parbat has claimed more lives than any other 8000ers relative to the number of attempts, hence the frightening nickname of Killer Mountain. It was first climbed in 1953 by a joint Austrian – German Expedition. Hermann Buhl made the final ascent in a tortuous 41 hours solo ordeal without oxygen. Italian mountaineer Reinhold Messner climbed the south face with his brother Gunther in 1970, descending by the Diamir face, where Gunther lost his life in an adventure.

Day 3

Full day free or day excursion to Nanga Parbat Base Camp (3967m) 5-6 hrs. Full day trip to Nanga Parbat Base Camp is between the Ganalo and Raikot glaciers just south of their confluence. From Beyal an easy trail continues south 30 minutes through scattered junipers and birches to an obvious huge boulder, topped by a cow’s skull balancing on a pole, at the lateral moraine’s edge. People aptly call this place View Point (3667m). The breath-taking close-up views to the south-east include the four major icefalls coming from the Chongra peaks (ranging from 6448m to 6830m), Raikot (7070m) and Nanga Parbat’s north face that converge to form the incredibly serac-covered Raikot Glacier. To the north are impressive views over the Indus Valley and far to the north-east is the 7000m Rakaposhi-Haramosh Range. Passing through stands of birch and pockets of the fragrant sojo punar, a promise revered by local people, the trail climbs 125m in 45 minutes to the top of a moraine. The whole massif forms a sweeping glacial amphitheatre. A cairn –marked route across the rubble-covered Ganalo Glacier leads from here in one hour to Nanga Parbat Base Camp (3967m). Back to Fairy Meadows for overnight.

Day 4

After breakfast trek down to Tato and drive by jeep to Deosai.Meals and overnight at camp. The narrow jeep road to Astore leaves the KKH at Jaglot. 60km south of Gilgit and 30km north of Raikot Brideg, crossing a bridge over the Indus rive and heading 40km south-east up the Astore valley skirting Nanga Parbat’s north east flank. Overnight at hotel. Deosai, a vast high-altitude plateau south and west of Skardu, borders on Indian-controlled Kashmir. Nowhere lower than 4000m, this uninhibited alpine grassland has numerous clear streams with unusual snow trout, a significant brown bear population and a multitude of golden marmots. Its re-markable biodiversity has earned it recognition as a national park. Deosai gets its name from Deo, a powerful spirit.

Day 5

Full day at leisure to enjoy the nature in its pure form and see if you could encounter brown bear. Overnight in tents.

Day 6

Jeep ride to Skardu enroute visiting Satpara lake. PM Shigar fort excursion. Skardu is Baltistan’s administrative centre and transport hub, the town lies at the base of a huge 350 rock outcrop along the Indus river’s true left bank. Rocky summits rise 3000 m above town, dramatically enclosing this scenic 40km-long by 10km-wide valley. Overnight at hotel.

Day 7

Transfer to airport to fly back to Islamabad
